I think his talents going forward have been obscured because he doesn't have the confidence in Hudd and Zok to cover wisely. And neither would I. But I think he can make runs out of midfield that Modric can capitalize on. Modric is always looking upfield but until recently no one was giving him a good target. Along with PSB, I think the creativity in midfield can flourish with someone like JJ.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8813669675884552864.post-19237539144336427372009-03-17T13:14:00.000+00:002009-03-17T13:14:00.000+00:00He finds it too easy to hide and play others into ...He finds it too easy to hide and play others into trouble instead of taking control.

Just wish that someone would stand up to Levy and say they won't play his pet again.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8813669675884552864.post-77063200782505603022009-03-17T12:36:00.000+00:002009-03-17T12:36:00.000+00:00He lacks the "eye of the tiger"i.e. no killer inst...He lacks the "eye of the tiger"
i.e. no killer instinct. His all round game is good, but he is not agressive enough, he doesn't seem to want it enough. You can have all the other qualities like running around and getting on the end of crosses BUT becasue he cannot tackle - you know, slide in, barge in, shoulder someone off the ball, just being tougher and stronger against poorer footballers who are technically worse but get stuck in, the game passes him by. He just doesn't control the midfield. Viera and Keane controlled the midfield before they even got on the pitch, that was how good they were. Why is Jenus so frustrating?? Because the rest of his game is good enough. Look, he doesn't have to have a bad rep, just put himself about.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8813669675884552864.post-62931077689991267672009-03-17T12:30:00.000+00:002009-03-17T12:30:00.000+00:00But then the beauty of the solo goal against Arsen...But then the beauty of the solo goal against Arsenal to make it 4-3? I'd never use the 'wonder' and Jenas in the same sentence.

I think you hit the nail on the head with:

'Maybe Jenas is simply an average player who excels now and again rather than a player with all the ability in the world who doesn't show it week in week out because he lacks belief.'

Slap bang in the middle of those two opinions is the answer.

He's a squad player for me. I thought he played well against Villa, and the team does lack a certain spark when he isn't there. I think the reason everyone gives him such stick is because he does have potential and he can be a great player. But he's better than most that we've had in the center of the midfield, and I think he's going to just get better.Joel Bettshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04428522061783168821noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8813669675884552864.post-66238535769758913182009-03-17T00:17:00.000+00:002009-03-17T00:17:00.000+00:00For me JJ is like Bentley, flashes of well above a...For me JJ is like Bentley, flashes of well above average skill to tempt managers into thinking 'He could be world class with a bit of work' but way too infrequently, and that's what makes them the kind of players Alan Hansen would call luxury players. Maybe he could be useful as an impact player coming off the bench, but I would never start him ahead of Luka Modic, who is a world class central midfielder being played out of place as a left winger or a support forward.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8813669675884552864.post-42311987847877291452009-03-17T00:16:00.000+00:002009-03-17T00:16:00.000+00:00All I know is for some reason we always seem to pl...All I know is for some reason we always seem to play better when he is in the team. At times he looks up and you can see what he is attempting to do, and he tries to lay the ball or spray it across the field and it doesn't come off at all. And everyone groans at the attempt. On other occassions (remember Anfield?) he missing from half an inch out when its almost impossible to not score.

I think he does have good passing and shooting abilities and he does have a clever brain but his actions at times are completely daft.

Curious indeedy.

Enjoying this series.
